Featured on the ELLE Decor and AD 100 lists of the world’s preeminent talents in architecture and interior design,Jean-Louis Deniot has long been and of the best interior designers in the world. His décors are his playground, spaces where spontaneity and magic are de rigueur. Recognized worldwide for his eclectic and emblematic interiors, Jean-Louis Deniot plays in a multiplicity of repertoires, never sticking to purity of style, rather letting his academic training translate into a vocabulary that is both informal and bold. If he does contemporary, it is always with a weighty dose of history and references infused into it to produce a timeless yet timely scenario.
Minimalism is not for Jean-Louis Deniot as neither is excess. Balance and osmosis is what he is after, offsetting the sometimes rigid facet of architecture with an inmost vision of refinement, comfort, and openness making his creations around the world have to revel in. For him, style equates lifestyle and must promote harmony and wellbeing.
Biography: the man before the myth
As a kid Jean-Louis Deniot have attended the Ecole Camondo as it is one of the most prestigious schools in the business. There he studied contemporary styles and concepts which enabled him to develop his analytic capacities and creative mind, but he rapidly felt that the program was too limiting. That is the reason why he started to work at the age of 21, managing renovations and undertaking apartment restorations. He was also passionate about art history and architecture, which led him, upon graduating, to open his own agency. The school provided him with solid credibility because of its untarnished reputation and his own work gave him the confidence he needed.
Jean-Louis Deniotfirst opened his firm in 2000, and today is considered as The Future of the new generation of French High Decoration. Since 2000, Deniot’s Paris-based firm has consisted of a talented crew of 15 individuals. He has worked on several residential and commercial projects and even designed the interior for a Falcon 2000 private plane.
The projects
A great enthusiast of iconic designs, his decors feature no shortage of arresting materials and textures tempered with subtle color palettes, muted tones and impeccable lighting. At the crossroads between classical terminology and contemporary aesthetics, Jean-Louis Deniot’s interiors are serene, elegant and dramatic as awash with nods to other time periods, yet never typical or literal.

His past projects span houses in the Hamptons, an apartment in Chicago, chalets in Aspen, private residences in Miami Beach, an entirely revamped original Paul Williams property in Beverly Hills, an Art Deco city house and a palace in New Delhi, a 1930’s style penthouse in Milan, a summer house in Capri, a 70’s style apartment in Colombia, and an estate in Monaco. Paris is home to several stunning achievements such as mansions and private apartments among countless others.
Palace New Delhi
Jean-Louis Deniot, the assignment to create an estate in New Delhi from the ground up was the commission of his dreams. All it took to transform it into reality were ingenuity, patience, and a cadre of Indian craftsmen.
The starting point for the design of the 25, 000-square-foot, five-bedroom home was a photo of Picasso’s 19th-century Villa California in Cannes. “I wanted a house that looks 100 years old” said the owner of the house. Deniot, however, was keen to avoid the impression of a French house transplanted to India. Instead, he took inspiration from the architecture of the legendary British architect Edwin Lutyens in New Delhi. The stately portico on the front façade and the colonnades that wrap around the side wings are particularly characteristic.
Falcon 2000
Natural fibers, sensuous and luxurious, muted colors, stitched leathers, 1940’s style fabric patterns… Jean-Louis Deniot completely redecorated this Falcon 2000 using materials fit for interior architecture, allowing for his designs to travel even more.
In the first zone at the head of the jet, one can sit in comfortable armchairs covered in ivory-colored leather with taupe-colored inserts and contrasting Bordeaux-colored piping. The armchairs in the second zone are also covered by the same ivory leather, but have inserts in lighter colored perforated leather, and are finished with a taupe-colored piping. The third zone houses a sleek sofa upholstered in a fabric with a motif in the style of Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann that conveniently converts into a double bed when necessary.
To embellish the cabin, Deniot designed 100% wool carpeting that was manufactured by Tai Ping Carpet featuring asymmetrical patterns and shapes, and in colors that blend into the general color scheme. Refined and sensuous materials are used throughout the cabin, with lower paneling in braided leather, kitchenette and bar in a matte finished burl wood with brushed silver trimming and fittings, and suede embossed with a faux stingray motif. Attention to detail brings refinement to each space, galley and bathroom included. However, ornate decorative accessories and artwork do not have a place in this streamlined décor.

Inspirational quotes by Jean-Louis Deniot
“I always want to get as far as possible from the white box. My interiors are about atmosphere, character, texture, and a sense of harmony.”
“Listen to yourself, to choose what feels right. Whatever seems logical to you, follow your instinct and learn from those who’ve had great careers.”
